This year the festival entered into the second decade of its existence. The eleventh year took place between August 2nd to 24th. The organizers relied on the audience’s overjoyed reception of the open-air concerts. According to the words of the festival-goers, these evenings have a special charm created by the ever alive breath of history. Eleven conerts were planned in places where music is not usually heard, because they are not freely accessible. In the space in front of the Monastery Church of the Knights of the Cross with a Red Star, in the garden of Kooperativa, pojišťovna, a.s., on the right bank of the Vltava river with a view of the castle terraces, in the castle’s second courtyard or by the Baroque fountain in the castle garden. Over the course of the concerts, chamber pieces as well as vocal and operatic pieces, and solo recitals or concerts with a banquet, were presented. The Night with Mozart was held in the Respirium in front of the Riding Hall, Music of the Middle Ages as well as the present was performed in the Lapidarium, several opera performances from Verdi’s Rigoletto could be seen on the Revolving Stage, Daniel Hůlka sang famous musical melodies and opera arias accompanied by the Czech National Symphonic Orchestra with the conductor Petr Vronský. During a single evening music and masks came alive in the Mask Hall.
Český Krumlov was struck by a catastrophic flood in this year. It had a deep impact on the festival. But human solidarity proved to be great and strong, for many of the performers, festival partners, festival-goers and organizers donated to the account for the renewal of Český Krumlov. Even those who had their performances cancelled at the last minute, as for example the Polish Silesian Chamber Orchestra of Katowice, which organized a concert in its hometown, the proceeds of which were also donated to the citizens of Český Krumlov. The American flutist Robert Stalmann, who performed with the Martinů Quartet on August 21st, 2002, also donated.
