St. Florian Boys’ Choir

The world-famous Sankt Florianer Sängerknaben will bring more than nine centuries of boys' choir tradition to Krumlov, where the purity of children's voices blends with the spiritual tradition of the Augustinian monastery of St. Florian.

Český Krumlov will welcome one of the oldest and most renowned boys' choirs in the world: the Sankt Florianer Sängerknaben. The roots of this ensemble date back to 1071 and are inextricably linked to the Augustinian monastery of St. Florian in Upper Austria. For more than nine centuries, the ensemble has cherished the tradition of sacred music. The concert program will offer a colorful musical journey through the centuries, from Renaissance compositions by Palestrina to works by Mozart, Bruckner, and Britten, to contemporary composers such as Karl Jenkins and Frode Fjellheim. The second part of the evening will feature secular choral music: Renaissance songs, English and Scottish ballads, and popular 20th-century compositions. Under the direction of Markus Stumpner, the choir regularly performs at prestigious European venues and festivals and collaborates with leading orchestras.

This concert is part of the Third Festival Weekend, which includes three following concerts:

Sankt Florianer Sängerknaben

The boys’ choir from Sankt Florian is one of the oldest in the world, with a history dating back to 1071. Among its most notable former members is Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday the choir commemorated in 2024 by recording the album Erinnerung. St. Florian Monastery, located between Vienna and Salzburg, is an important Baroque and cultural center in Austria. The choir performs as a musical ambassador around the world, has appeared at festivals in Salzburg, Vienna, and Aix-en-Provence, and has collaborated with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Bruckner Orchester Linz. Franz Welser-Möst is the honorary president of the choir’s friends association. The choir’s soloists sing boy roles in leading opera houses (Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Verona, Barcelona, Aix-en-Provence) and on recordings. In 1989, a male choir was formed, consisting mainly of former members. The discography includes Austrian music, carols, and music played on historical instruments. Franz Farnberger was the artistic director from 1983, and Markus Stumpner has been the choirmaster since 2018.
